Even if you have never been to the Keys before, you can now travel around them like you know where you are going…  Buccaneer Press recently updated their Florida Keys Adventure Guide, which is free and you can find at: http://buccaneerpublishing.com/FL_Keys_Adventure_Guide.pdf (Adobe Acrobat).  Print out a copy and throw it in your glove box for your late spring trip to the Keys.

Here’s the ultimate accessory for concert goers or any sporting event. Now I’m going to have to find some way to insulate the thing to keep the margaritas cold. I have a bad feeling I’m gonna start to look like Santa at the Buffett shows.  More info can be found at: http://thebeerbelly.com/

Wow, it’s been a LONG busy week.  I got alot of yardwork done, including planting trees, flowers, pulling weeds and spreading 2 pickup loads of mulch, and that is just the front of the house.  I still need to “open” the deck for the year, which is going to include powerwashing all the spider webs from the back of the house, lots of cleanup, moving the hot tub 3 feet and building another section of deck, and much more.  I have about another month to have everything in great shape before Tanner’s birthday party.  No problems.

Speaking of Tanner, she is mobile.  She can go up a flight of steps, walks all over the place, and is not happy being carried anymore.  Tonight she decided to wander into the living room, and bump her face into the coffee table, splitting her lip open.  She’ll live, it was a little blood, but she’s OK.

TBear called yesterday, and she made straight A’s except for 1 B in English.  I’m very proud of her…

Lovely wife is doing great too, and starting to get over being quite so tired…

My truck is not being totaled by the insurance, though they are replacing the roof, hood, all the doors and just about every other body panel, as well as the windshield.  By the time I get it back, I’ll be without it for over a month.

With all that, along with all the work I had this week, I’m exhausted.  I’m really looking forward to tomorrow evening….

So, what’s tomorrow evening?  There’s a Buffett show in Dallas, actually on somewhat east coast time.  The last few shows have been west coast, starting at like 11pm Indiana time, and on a “school night”.  Makes it kinda hard for me to listen in on Radio Margaritaville when I have to be up early the next morning.  Well, Dallas is an early show, and it’s a weekend.  Be sure to listen in on Sirius Channel 31 or Radio Margaritaville, and make sure you have a slushy boat drink in hand…

Speaking of Buffett shows, I’ll let you in on a little secret, if ya don’t abuse it…  This site (ftp://jimmy:buffett@jimmybuffett.servebeer.com) has a bunch of concerts on it, including some recordings dating back many years.

I don’t know why I find this so funny, but I can’t stop laughing at it…  I guess it does not take much to scare a goat…

Having a Beary good time…

A couple of years ago I spotted a small bear in my neighborhood (actually on my property), on my way home from work.  It was about 2am at the time, and I called the cops, they came out but he was long gone by that point.  After speaking with the local conservation officer, he confirmed that there had been other bear sightings in the next town over, and it was likely a little black (brown?) bear.  The neighbors still poke fun of the fact, or just they think I was drinking (I wasn’t) that night.  We have an enormouse beaver that lives behind our house in the lake, but I don’t think that a beaver could be quite that big.  I still stand behind the fact I saw a bear.  I believe he lives in the large wooded/meadow/swampy area down below the dam on the lake.

Bear Advisory

The Forest Service has issued a warning for the national forests this summer. They urge visitors to wear bells (to alert bears to their approach) and to carry pepper spray (to be used in the event of attack).

Visitors should be alert for signs of fresh bear activity, and should be able to tell the difference between Black Bear dung and Grizzy Bear dung.

Black Bear dung is rather small and round, and sometimes contains fruit seeds and/or squirrel fur.

Grizzly Bear dung has bells in it, and smells like pepper.

Updates

Some quick updates:

- Hoot soundtrack came out today, Circuit City has ‘em for $9.99, and Walmart for $14.78.  I got mine at Walmart, and they matched the Circuit City price.  The soundtrack is excellent, I really like the new Floridays.  Be sure to listen to Jimmy howling on Warewolves in London.  Well worth the price.

- First Buffett show of the season is tonight, 11PM EST.  Be sure to listen to it on Radio Margaritaville, which will be broadcasting live from their internet site (click play on the right side of my page) and on Sirius.  The tailgate party starts at 10:30.

- My Explorer is in the shop for hail damage repair.  I have a feeling I won’t see it for quite a while.  I’m driving Jaymie’s Aztek for now, and she has a rental Minivan.

- I’m still dealing with the allergic reaction from a couple of weeks ago, and am seeing an allergist on Thursday.  Hopefully he can get to the root cause of this, or at least be able to figure out what I need to avoid.  With the testing on Thursday, I’m sure to have a miserable few days afterwards.

- I have the front lawn/flower beds almost done, having pulled weeds, planting many flowers and spreading LOTS of mulch.  We even planted this really cool bushy “tripple” birch tree in the front yard.  Everything is fertalized, it should look fantastic by Memorial Day weekend, when we are having Tanner’s birthday party.

That’s enough for now…

Kohl (German Cabbage)

Filed April 16, 2006 at 8:42 pm under Grog and Salmagundi by TJ

I’ve given you my Sauerbraten recipe (here), and I’ve often said that it’s it best served with Red Cabbage and potatoe pancakes.  I made a 10 lb. sauerbraten last night, and I am getting ready to cook the cabbage, so I thought I’d share how I make it…  (UPDATE: I should tell you I don’t actually measure when I am cooking this, I use very approximated amounts)

Red Cabbage

1 large red cabbage finely shredded
2 tbsp. margarine
4 chopped apples
1 chopped onion (optional – I don’t…)
2 tbsp. brown sugar
1/4 cup red wine
Juice of at least 1 lemon

Melt the margarine in a thick-bottomed saucepan, then add the cabbage, the apples, the onion, sugar, and lemon juice and water enough to prevent burning.

Simmer for two hours, add the wine (or water or stock), and continue slowly cooking until the liquid is reduced to nothing.

Twister – Left hand on red…

UPDATE: My truck got looks like it was turned over to a group of kindergardeners with Ball Peen Hammers.

We had a little twister touch down by work, golf ball sized hail, fun, fun.  Pictures below, including of the funnel.  They were with my cell phone, so they are not the best.

2005 Mensa Invitational Finalists were recently posted, they were so funny, I had to give them a page of their own for now.   Page is here.

Hear Music First: Hoot Soundtrack – (Mailboat)

Tip: Make sure you turn your popup blocker off, and be sure to use IE, Firefox will not work.

Hoot soundtrack will be available in stores on the 18th, and the movie is due out on May 5 to complete with MI3.  For those lucky enough, there are special screenings, with a Buffett simulcast at select theatres, but if you have not been invited, it’s already too late to make arrangements.  Don’t worry, I’ll let everyone know how it is…   ;-)
